I am working on my elbow lever, and would appreciate any tips to work on straightening my elbow lever.

For me doing them on home made PVC parallets and positioning the parallets quite close together allows me to dig my elbows into my abdominal area and really concentrate my power down through my core. A wide grip is a lot harder to hold a pose.

As for straightening, do you mean your legs? Getting your legs fully straight takes practice and time if your are a newcomer. Hold some frog legged levers for as you can, increasing your core strength and slowly work up to extending your legs fully. Be patient.

Doing them with your hands elevated, as Dean suggests, will definitely make it easier to train the skill because your legs have more room above the floor.

If you are having trouble with keeping your legs extended straight behind you, working on planks and leg raises more will help build the abdominal strength, and working on bridges will help build the mobility in the lower back.

You can also try elbow lever back extensions. Although the full movement is more difficult than a standard elbow lever, you can do a partial movement to help build the strength up. I find the exercise most comfortable to practice on a countertop, as it gives ample room for your legs to hang vertically.

As Mike shows in the first picture, you can also work the skill with your knees bent, or with one leg extended, to build strength.
